The first few minutes of a class session are among the most consequential and most under designed in the college classroom. How a professor opens a class determines whether students arrive at the content ready to think or still deciding whether it is within their reach or worth their attention. In this hands-on workshop, participants will examine three high-leverage instructional moves – Name the Why, Make It Personal, Preview the Structure – designed to orient every student before the cognitive work begins. Participants will leave the workshop with three concrete, classroom-ready strategies and a plan for putting them to work in the very next class session.
