Supporting International Students in Learning Environments
This workshop is designed for faculty and others with teaching responsibilities who want to better support international students in classrooms, research labs, and other academic spaces. We will explore the unique strengths international students bring, as well as the barriers they may encounter, including cultural adjustment, language challenges, and navigating unfamiliar academic expectations.
Attention will be given to how mental health concern (e.g., isolation, stress, anxiety) can affect student learning and participation. Participants will gain strategies to create learning environments where international students feel valued, supported, and able to thrive. Practical tools will be shared for mentoring in labs and research groups, facilitating cross-cultural communication, and fostering student well-being. By the end of the session, participants will leave with concrete approaches to enhance learning experiences and promote the success of international students across Tulane.
Panelists: Frank Calabrese (Office of International Students and Scholars), Jinaki Flint (Counseling and Psychiatric Services), Toni Weiss (Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching), and Anneliese Singh (Office of Academic Excellence and Opportunity)
