Academic Skills as Life Skills: Helping Students Think Beyond the Assignment.

In this workshop, faculty will learn how to frame the projects and assignments they assign in new ways that will improve student engagement. They’ll learn how to walk students through a meaningful past academic project (such as a paper) using metacognition to identity the process students used, the mental muscles they flexed, and the life skills they demonstrated. In this case, “life skills” refers to emotional intelligence (EQ), intellectual intelligence (IQ), as well as technical, transferable, and workplace skills. This helps students reframe their thinking from “All I know how to do is write papers,” to “Hey, I have high-value, marketable skills.
